Interaction Cum Selection of Office Bearers (5.8.25)

Economics Association of PCM S.D. College for Women, Jalandhar, organised an Interaction session for the students of the Economics department in Room No. 13 at 1:40 PM. The primary objective of the session was to foster familiarity among the students and to conduct the selection of office bearers for the academic year 2025- 26.

 

 

 The HOD gave an insightful introduction about the college, highlighting its achievements, goals, and vision. A brief overview of the Economics Department’s activities was also presented, including seminars, workshops, field visits, and student-led initiatives. Students introduced themselves, sharing their educational background, interests, and hobbies. This interaction helped create a comfortable and friendly atmosphere. Many students expressed enthusiasm for participating in academic and extracurricular activities, showing great potential for leadership and teamwork. 

Group Discussion (4.8.25 & 8.8.25) 

The Economics Association of PCM SD College for Women, Jalandhar successfully organised two debate competitions in Room No. 13 at 9:40 a.m., witnessing enthusiastic participation and active intellectual engagement from the students. The events aimed to encourage critical thinking, improve argumentation skills, and create awareness about important socio-economic issues.

The first debate was conducted on the topic “Retirement Age Should Be Extended or Not.” Two teams, Team A and Team B, presented their views with confidence and clarity.

Team A, consisting of Kasak, Anshika, and Savita, spoke in favour of extending the retirement age. They highlighted increased life expectancy, the growing need for experienced professionals, and the financial benefits of longer employment. They emphasized that many individuals remain mentally and physically fit beyond the conventional retirement age and that their valuable expertise should not be wasted.

Team B, represented by Pallavi, Harman, and Rulli, argued against the extension of the retirement age. They raised concerns about limited job opportunities for the younger generation, a possible decline in productivity with age, and the importance of enjoying post-retirement life. They strongly advocated for creating space for fresh talent in the workforce. The debate was engaging, with well-reasoned rebuttals and counterpoints. The audience appreciated the clarity, delivery, and depth of research shown by the participants.

The second debate competition was held on the topic “Inheritance – Is it Good or Bad for the Economy?” Two teams participated and presented strong arguments and counterarguments.

Team A spoke in favour of inheritance, stating that it provides financial security to families, supports business continuity, and allows for long-term investments. They argued that inherited wealth creates stability, encourages entrepreneurship, and helps maintain family-owned enterprises, which contribute significantly to economic growth.

Team B argued against inheritance, pointing out that excessive transfer of wealth from one generation to the next leads to economic inequality. They emphasized that inherited wealth often reduces motivation to work hard, concentrates resources in a few hands, and limits opportunities for individuals from less privileged backgrounds. They further stated that reducing inheritance could promote merit-based success and enhance overall productivity in the economy. The debate was intense and thought-provoking, offering the audience a balanced understanding of the issue.

Both sessions proved to be highly informative and intellectually stimulating. The faculty members of the department cherished the hard work of the students and encouraged them to participate in more such academic activities in the future.

Interaction Online Guest Lecture on the topic "Financial Literacy" (28.8.25) 

PG Department of Economics of PCM S.D. College for Women organized an online guest lecture on the topic “Financial Literacy” on 28 August 2025 at 1:00 pm. The primary objective of the session was to enhance students’ understanding of financial knowledge and to highlight its importance in everyday life, especially for young learners preparing for future responsibilities. 

  

The program commenced with a warm welcome by Dr. Sandeep Kaur, who addressed the gathering and introduced the guest speaker, Ms. Gauri Geet. Ms. Geet delivered an insightful and engaging lecture that centered around the fundamental pillars of financial literacy. She discussed the concepts of money, needs, wants, and desires, highlighting the importance of differentiating between them for sound decision-making. She further elaborated on the roles of income, savings, and expenses, explaining how effective budgeting lays the foundation for financial stability. A key part of her lecture focused on the impact of inflation and how money gradually loses its value over time, stressing the need for prudent financial planning. She also cautioned students about the dangers of debt, describing how careless borrowing can lead to debt traps. While talking about investments, Ms. Geet pointed out that although fixed deposits are considered safe, they usually yield lower returns compared to other investment avenues. She encouraged students to explore investment options wisely, balancing risk and return. Another significant segment of her talk addressed the rising cases of investment fraud. She explained how fraudulent practices operate and advised practical strategies to detect and avoid such scams. The lecture was highly interactive, with participants raising thoughtful questions, which reflected their keen interest in the subject. Overall, the session proved to be extremely beneficial, equipping students with valuable knowledge to manage their personal finances responsibly and to cultivate financial discipline. The program concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks to Ms. Gauri Geet for her enlightening and informative contribution. Faculty members of the department cherished the hard work of the students and encouraged them to participate in more such activities.

Case Study Presentation Competition (24.9.25)

Economics Association of PCM S.D. College for Women organized a Case Study Presentation Competition on 'Comparative Study of Growth & Development' on 24th September 2025 at 9:40 AM in the MBEIT Lab. The event aimed to enhance students analytical and research skills by encouraging them to explore and present real-world economic scenarios. 

 

The session witnessed enthusiastic participation from the students of BA, B.Sc., and B.Ed. (Semester 5). The presentations were based on comparative economic studies of different countries, giving students an opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to practical case studies. The students presented their work: Rulli - Canada vs Afghanistan, Harmanpreet Comparative Study of India and Japan, Anshu and Savita Comparison between India and Pakistan, Khushi and Pallavi - Developed vs Underdeveloped Country: UK and Pakistan, Kasak - South Korea's Path vs Nigeria's Struggle. Each presentation was well-researched and informative, highlighting important socio-economic indicators, development models, and policy implications. The students demonstrated confidence and clarity while presenting their topics. The session proved to be highly interactive, with participants engaging in meaningful discussions and asking questions, thereby enriching the learning experience. President Shri Naresh Budhia, Senior Vice President Shri Vinod Dada, members of the managing committee, Principal Pooja Prashar, and the Head of the Department, Mrs. Divya Budhia, and other faculty members of the department congratulated the students of the Economics Department and urged them to continue their pursuit of excellence. They commended the students for their achievements and contributions, which reflect their calibre. Overall, it was a motivating experience for the students, reinforcing their commitment to excellence and celebrating their achievements.

Badge Pinning Ceremony (4.10.25)

The Economics Association of PCM SD College for Women, Jalandhar, organized an Investiture Ceremony on 4th October 2025 at 2:20 p.m. The event was held near the main stage in the gracious presence of Principal Prof. (Dr.) Pooja Prashar. The ceremony marked the official induction of the newly appointed office bearers for the academic year 2025–26. 

The program commenced with a formal welcome address, by Head of Department. The audience included faculty members and students from various departments who gathered to witness the proud moment of leadership recognition.

The newly appointed office bearers took an oath of responsibility and service, pledging to perform their duties with sincerity and enthusiasm. The event reflected a spirit of unity, enthusiasm, and pride among the students. Principal Prof. (Dr.) Pooja Prashar addressed the gathering with inspiring words, encouraging the students to uphold the values of discipline, leadership, and integrity. She motivated them to take initiative in organizing academic and co-curricular activities that contribute to holistic development. 

Poster Making Competition (17.10.25)

The Economics Association, under the aegis of the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) of PCM SD College for Women, Jalandhar, organized a Poster Making Competition on the theme “Entrepreneurs: Architects of Economic Growth” on 17th October 2025 at 1:40 p.m. in Room No. 43. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from 13 students of B.A., B.Ed., and B.Sc. (Economics) Semester I. The students creatively expressed their ideas on the pivotal role of entrepreneurs in shaping economic progress and innovation. 

The first position was secured by Ritika (B.A. Sem I), while Jasamrit (B.A. Sem I) and Simran (B.Sc. Eco. Sem I) bagged the second position. The third position was jointly shared by Kirandeep Kaur and Sanjana (B.A. Sem I). The winners and participants were appreciated by Dr. Divya Budhia, Head of the P.G. Department of Economics, along with Dr. Sandeep Kaur and Ms. Umar Fatima, for their creativity and active participation. 

Discussion on Union Budget (2.2.26)

Economics Association of PCM S.D College for women organized a Classroom Discussion on the topic “How does current Union Budget affect common people?" on 02.02.26 at 11.40 a.m. in MBEIT lab. In class, students actively participated in discussion of the Union Budget 2026–27. 

How does current Union Budget affect common people both directly and indirectly because it influences income, daily expenses, job opportunities, and public services. Some students mentioned that if the government increases the standard deduction or provides tax relief, salaried people will get more take-home salary, which will help families manage household expenses easily. Others pointed out that changes in taxes on essential goods and medicines can make some items cheaper and some costlier, which directly impacts monthly budgets. A few students also discussed that the government’s focus on infrastructure development and support for MSMEs can create more job opportunities, especially for youth and small business workers. It was also highlighted that farmers may benefit from new agricultural schemes and technology support, leading to better income in rural areas. Students further added that investment in education, skill development, and healthcare will improve future opportunities and reduce financial pressure on families. Overall, the class concluded that the budget tries to maintain a balance between economic growth and public welfare, and its actual impact depends on a person’s income and occupation. 

 Class Discussion on Artificial Intelligence (25.2.26)

Economics Association of PCM S.D College for women organized an insightful classroom awareness session on the topic "Artificial Intelligence in Everyday Life" in collaboration with the Institution's Innovation Council (IIC). The session was conducted in Room No. 50, with the objective of creating awareness among students about the growing importance and applications of Artificial Intelligence in modern society. The session was presented by Savita student of BSC Sem VI, who effectively explained the concept and significance of Artificial Intelligence in today's Digital Age. 

The presenter discussed the evolution of human civilization from the Industrial Age to the Digital Age and highlighted how Al has become an integral part of daily life. During the session, the student elaborated on Artificial Intelligence as a branch of computer science that enables machines to think, learn, and make decisions like humans. Various practical examples were discussed including Al applications in education, healthcare, transportation, communication, and entertainment tools such as Google Maps, voice assistants, face recognition systems, and online recommendation platforms were explained to make the topic more relatable and understandable. The session also addressed both the advantages and challenges of Al, including efficiency, time-saving benefits, job displacement, and privacy concerns. The presentation was interactive, and students actively participated by asking questions and sharing their views, making the session engaging and informative. In total of 25 students of B.A., B.Sc. Economics and M.Com. attended the session. This session proved to be highly productive, promoting unity, enthusiasm, and a sense of responsibility among the students. Dr. Divya Budhia, members of IIC and other faculty members encouraged students to actively participate in departmental activities for overall personality development.

Quiz Competition (28.2.26)

Economics Association of PCM S.D College for women organised Academic Quiz Competition on 28th February 2026 at 9:40 a.m. in Room No. 13. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from students of B.A., B.Sc., B.A. B.Ed., and MBEIT. A total of 15 students participated in the competition, forming four teams. The quiz was conducted in five engaging and knowledge-based rounds. 

The first round, titled "Buddhi Parikshan", consisted of basic general knowledge questions aimed at testing the intellectual abilities and awareness of the participants. The second round, "Aaj Ki Taza Khabar", focused on current affairs, where students answered questions related to recent national and international events. The third round, "Boojho To Jaane", was a picture identification round in which participants were required to identify personalities, places, or objects displayed through images. The fourth round, "Arthastra Weapon of Economics", assessed students' knowledge of economic concepts, theories, and terminologies. The final round, "Data Ka Dangal", was based on data interpretation, where students analyzed images and answered questions based on the given information. The competition was conducted smoothly in a lively and interactive atmosphere. All the teams participated with great enthusiasm and displayed commendable knowledge and teamwork. The event proved to be highly informative and successful in enhancing students' general awareness, analytical skills, and understanding of economics and current affairs.

Article Writing Competition (30.3.26)

PG Department of Economics organized an Article Writing Competition on 30^th March 2026 at 11:00 a.m. in Room No. 43. The event witnessed active participation from students of B.A., B.Sc., B.A. B.Ed., and MBEIT. The competition aimed to enhance students writing skills, creativity, and critical thinking. Participants chose different topics, and they expressed their ideas thoughtfully through well-structured articles on recent scenarios and current problems. They wrote articles on issues such as environmental challenges, unemployment, digital education, inflation, and social awareness.

Guest Lecture (1.4.26)

PG Department of Economics organized a guest lecture on the topic “Skills Required to Make One’s Place in the Corporate World.” The lecture was delivered by Ms. Sakshi Dogra, COE at Shri Ram General Insurance Company, Jalandhar. 

Dr. Sandeep Kaur welcomed the guest with a warm speech and introduced her achievements and professional journey. Dr. Divya Budhia, Head of the Department, along with other faculty members, welcomed her by presenting a planter as a token of gratitude. During the lecture, Ms. Sakshi Dogra shared her inspiring career journey. She explained how she chose B.Sc. Economics and later pursued MBEIT to shape her career in the corporate sector. She discussed the importance of developing communication skills, confidence, and professional attitude to succeed in the corporate world. She encouraged students to actively participate in college activities to build confidence and enhance their personality. She also motivated students to focus on skill development and practical learning for better career opportunities. The session was highly informative and motivating. Students actively listened and gained valuable insights about building a successful career in the corporate world. The lecture concluded with a vote of thanks, by Head of Department expressing gratitude to the guest speaker for her valuable time and guidance.

National Webinar (7.4.26)

The PG Department of Economics organized a National Webinar on the topic “West Asia War: Economic Fallout for India" on 7th April 2026 at 1:00 p.m. The resource person for the webinar was, Mr. Aditya Barnwal, Assistant Professor in Economics from AURO University, Surat. 

The speaker elaborated on the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting that nearly 20% of global oil trade passes through this route. He discussed how geopolitical tensions in West Asia lead to rising oil prices and increased shipping costs. 

Mr. Barnwal further explained India’s energy dependency and how disruptions in oil supply result in rising import bills, widening of the current account deficit, and depreciation of the Indian rupee, making imports more expensive. He also discussed the impact on households, including increased fuel costs, food inflation, and erosion of real income. Additionally, he highlighted the implications for employment in Gulf countries, effects on various industries, and the broader economic challenges. The speaker also addressed how the Government of India is responding to such challenges and explained the role of the central bank in maintaining economic stability. He concluded the session by emphasizing the importance of understanding global events and their domestic economic consequences.

The Economics Association of PCM S.D. College for Women, Jalandhar, organized a Felicitation Ceremony on 28th April 2026 to recognize and celebrate the achievements of its students. A total of 15 students were honored for their active participation and valuable contributions to various departmental activities and competitions. 

The event was graced by the esteemed presence of Principal Dr. Pooja Prashar, who presented trophies and certificates to the students in appreciation of their hard work and consistent dedication to the Department of Economics throughout the year. The ceremony acknowledged their enthusiasm, commitment, and academic excellence. In her address, the principal emphasized the importance of the values instilled by the institution and encouraged students to uphold these principles as they move forward in their academic and professional journeys. President of College Governing Body Shri Naresh Budhia, Senior Vice President Shri Vinod Dada, members of the Managing Committee, Head of the Department Dr. Divya Budhia, and other faculty members extended their heartfelt congratulations to the students and encouraged them to continue striving for excellence.
